FML: Part Deux

“So, Miss Corcoran, can you tell me how this happened?” The ER doctor is holding my hand up and turning it here and there like it’s the oddest thing he’s ever seen. I can’t look at it. My stomach flips all over the place every time I see it.

“Well, one of the guys on my crew was screwing around with a pneumatic nail gun. You know, shooting it at shit on the ground.”

“Uh-huh,” he says absently.

“So, I went up to him and held my hand out, you know in a stopping motion.” I demonstrate by holding my hand out to show the universal sign for Stop. “I must have startled him because he pulled the trigger right then and the nail shot into my hand.” I swallow, attempting to make the feeling that I might vomit go away.

“Wow, that’s some tale.” He chuckles. “Well, let’s get that out of there, shall we?”

“Do I need surgery?”

“Oh, heavens no. The X-ray shows you were fortunate; it missed all of the important stuff in your hand. We’ll yank that sucker out of there.”

I flinch at the words “yank that sucker out of there.”

“Y-You’re going to pull it out?”

“Of course. We’ll numb your hand, so you won’t feel a thing until after the numbing agent wears off.”

“Then what?”

“It’ll hurt. I’ll give you a script for some pain meds so you can sleep.” He types something into his laptop. Turning back to me, he shakes his finger at me. “No more playing with nail guns, missy.” Then he giggles. Seriously. He giggles. “I’ll be back in a few minutes. You sit tight.”

“Huh?” What just happened there?

Before I can correct the weirdo, Ernie pokes his head into my little nook. “You’ve got company.”

I look over at him as he pulls the curtain back. “Mom?”

“Oh, sweetie. How’re you doing?”

“I’m good.” I turn back to Ernie. “Uh, who else is here?”

“Your dad, one of your brothers.” Ernie rolls his eyes. “My dad.”

“Who called all of them?”

“Well, I called my dad. He called your parents.”

“Ernie, why’d you call Donal?”

“Because you were hurt on the job. He needed to know.”

“Whatever. I’m fine. They’re going to ‘yank the sucker out of there.’”

“Jesus,” he mutters.

Yeah, Jesus is right. Before I can reply, Dr. Dork comes back into the room. “Miss Corcoran, do you remember the last time you had a tetanus shot?”

I close my eyes, trying to remember. “Those are the ones you need every ten years?”

“That’s correct.”

“I don’t remember.”

I look over at my mom, and she shrugs. “Middle school.”

“Well, we’ll go ahead and give you one of those along with some antibiotics. Are you allergic to any meds?”

“Not that I know of, Doc.”

“Good,” he says, typing into his computer. “Okay, is there any chance you could be pregnant?”

“What? Why do you need to know that?”

“Well, there are some things you shouldn’t take if you’re pregnant. The tetanus shot is fine if you’re expecting, and some antibiotics are better than others. The pain medications could be a concern,” he says absently.
